Let Science North bring our School Programs to you!
Science North strives to make science fun, dynamic and easy to understand with experiments, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Through Science North’s Outreach program, students in Northern Ontario communities can participate in hands-on science programs and interact with science staff to learn key science concepts while having fun. All programs are designed to meet learning objectives set out by the 2007 Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum. We offer a variety of classroom programs and assembly science shows to reach a wide audience of students.
For more information, availability or to book a visit from Science North:
We require access to programming spaces, such as classrooms and/or gymnasiums, to allow time for set-up and takedown.
For reasons of quality and safety, classroom programs have a maximum capacity of 30 students per program. There is no maximum capacity for assembly science show presentations although we recommend no more than 250 students for an optimal experience.
Science North Outreach programs serve communities at least 100 km from Sudbury. Science North invites nearby schools to visit our facility and make use of our in-house school programs.
To maximize effective use of resources, Science North will travel to Northern regions once one or a group of schools have booked a minimum of 4 or 5 programming days. Science North staff will seek new clients in the area and your help in promoting the program to increase the length of stay in your community would be appreciated. All bookings are tentative until the week has been fully booked.
Requests may be made at anytime. Bookings are based on a first come, first served basis – all requests are considered, but not guaranteed. A signed booking contract is required to secure the date.
Program cancellations received with less than one month notice will result in a full program fee being charged.
In the event Science North is unable to present a program due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstance, a full refund will be issued if an alternate date is not available.
Engage your entire school with a high-energy science show! This interactive show can be presented to a full auditorium or gymnasium and is the perfect way to reach as many students as possible. For an optimal experience, a maximum of 250 students is recommended.
2012-2013 Themed Science Show – Chemistry 101
Experiment! Investigate! Discover! Your students will be amazed at the elemental science that is chemistry.
From Mercury to Neptune and beyond, tour outer space without leaving planet Earth! Fly through our atmosphere, explore galaxies, get close to supernovas and nebulas, or slide through black holes!
Suitable for grades 1 to 8. The Planetarium educational experience is adapted for the appropriate grade level.
Science North offers fun and interactive classroom programs for JK to grade 8 that provide a unique, hands-on and curriculum-linked learning experience for your students.

Build a Healthy Body
(Suitable for JK to grade 1)
Students actively learn how to identify the food groups, develop healthy eating habits and examine the connection between what they eat and how the different parts of their bodies grow.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
On the LEGO Track
(Suitable for JK to grade 1)
Your students hop on the LEGO track and learn all about colours, patterns, shapes and sorting. They use hands-on equipment and learn how to follow a pattern by building their very own LEGO track and see whether their circus train will be able to ride the rails!
NEW!
Survivor: Northern Ontario
(Suitable for grade 2)
By examining various biological samples, your young biologists investigate the similarities and differences of certain animals and how these adaptations help them to survive in their habitat. Do these animals have what it takes to survive?
NEW!
Mix It!
(Suitable for grade 2)
Take a step in the delightful world of chemistry and investigate the properties of liquids and solids. By pouring and scooping, students create various mixtures and explore concepts of density and buoyancy. They also gain a better understanding of what solids dissolve in liquids.
NEW!
Plant Science
(Suitable for grade 3)
This hands-on, multi-sensory, fun program help students discover the parts of a plant, visible characteristics, plant adaptations and plants as food factories.
Bridges
(Suitable for grades 3 to 5)
Your young engineers are challenged to design and build a structure to meet a specific need. By the program’s end, each team understand why things like columns, struts, braces and arches are used in everyday construction.
Way to Glow!
(Suitable for grades 3 to 5)
Through various experiments and with the use of real scientific equipment, your students investigate the characteristics and properties of light and discover how white light is made up of many colours.
NEW!
Habitat Hopscotch
(Suitable for grade 4)
Through hands-on investigation, students learn what requirements plants and animals need in their habitat to survive. They investigate food chains, learn how plants and animals rely upon each other and make connections to their own everyday actions.
Breathe Easy
(Suitable for grades 4 to 6)
Your students explore the pulmonary system by examining a real pair of lungs. They also use real tools to learn about the connections between making healthy choices and being able to Breathe Easy.
Floating Cities
(Suitable for grades 5 to 8)
As the global human population continues to grow, scientists and engineers are investigating alternative solutions for building cities. In this program, students work in teams of engineers to design and build structures that are capable of being maintained on water.
Charged Up!
(Suitable for grades 5 and 6)
Basic configurations of series and parallel circuits are introduced to students who then design and build electrical circuits and describe the function of their component parts. They also investigate ways in which electrical energy is transformed into other forms of energy.
NEW!
Eco-citement!
(Suitable for grades 6 and 7)
Ecosystem interactions are introduced to students by using a dichotomous key to classify both biotic and abiotic elements. Students get to use hands-on tools to discover interrelationships between members of the naturally biodiverse community.
Water in the Environment
(Suitable for grades 7 and 8)
Students investigate water as a pure substance and as a mixture, and why water is a universal solvent through hands-on manipulation with scientific tools used to test pH, salinity, and chlorine.
Cell-ebration!
(Suitable for grades 7 and 8)
Students investigate the structure of an animal cell and learn its various functions and processes while learning basic microscopy and slide preparation techniques.
Invite the Cool Science Caravan to your next event!
Your Science North experience includes 7 hands-on exhibits led by our popular Bluecoat scientists!
Minimum two (2) day booking in Northern Ontario, plus mileage and accommodation.
We require eight (8) large tables, access to electricity and water and shelter from the elements (if needed).
If you have special needs for your event, or have questions about Science North Outreach:
Animal Adaptations:
It's a matter of life and death! Animals have developed features and behaviours (adaptations) that allow them to survive and thrive where they live. Learn how a tarantula can release its body hairs for defense! See first hand how a scorpion's body acts like one giant eye! This exhibit promises to explain the weird and amazing adaptations our live animals have developed to survive.
Engineering Building Challenge:
Test your skills and explore your creativity. By using wooden planks, attempt to build structures such as towers, bridges or try your hand at building furniture or even a car! Let your imagination guide your creation.
Human Fitness:
What is fitness and what does it meant to be physically fit? Measure your balance, flexibility, strength, endurance and more and see how you compare to other Canadians. Learn what daily changes you can make to increase your energy and improve your health.
Nanoscience:
Regular everyday materials can have different properties on the nanoscale. See how a butterfly's wing uses nanotechnology to produce shimmering colour and work together to build a carbon nanotube!
Shake, Rattle, and Roll:
Get ready for some ground shattering science! Test how buildings withstand the forces that occur during the miniature earthquake simulation. When the ground begins to rumble, the buildings begin to crumble!
Tactile Exploration:
Using the sense of touch and sight, "little scientists" explore the materials found at this station. Curiosity and intrigue will guide them to discover all the items hidden under a layer of leaves and twigs.
Wild About Wildlife:
Are you curious about cute or creepy critters? Come meet some of Science North's LIVE animal ambassadors! Learn about their biology and behaviour, as you engage with these amazing creatures up close. Take a walk on the wild side!
We will be the leader among science centres in providing inspirational, educational and entertaining science experiences.
