While it's difficult for Jennifer to choose her favourite part of the Ends of the Earth exhibit, discussing the specially-designed interactive games that visitors can play brought out her trademark enthusiasm for her work. A few examples are Test Your Ice-Q - a trivia game about the poles - and Feed the Chick which gives visitors some insight into the trials of life as a penguin. "We learned a lot from Discovering Chimpanzees, and it shows in this exhibit." The core team working on this exhibit at Science North consists of a dozen people, but there are also other teams working on design and fabrication of the exhibit off site.

Designed as a travelling exhibit, Ends of the Earth is already booked until 2010 at various science centres and museums across North America. "Polar science is a hot topic now," Jennifer added.

ends of the earth concept

"Artist's rendering of Science North's Special Exhibition,
Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins"

Originally from Ottawa, Jennifer studied Kinesiology at the University of Ottawa. She's been working at Science North for the better part of 23 years. Science North is well-respected in both the science centre and scientific communities, and Ends of the Earth exhibit has been well received by both. "Our science advisors to the exhibit include botanists, biologists, ice specialists, and polar historians. They're all thrilled that we're bringing their passions to light" she said.

"Ultimately, we want people who experience the exhibit to leave with an understanding that the Poles are indicators of significant, measurable change in the earth's climate. Ice shelves are breaking off glaciers and winter is shortening. It's current, and it's real. We hope that the exhibit provokes action on the individual level."

So what's next for Jennifer? Following the launch of Ends of the Earth, she'll have a few days to enjoy the completed exhibit and then it's off to Antarctica where she and colleague Nancy Griffin will meet with scientists conducting research there, and both will report back via the media and Science North's website in what's being touted as "Jennifer and Nancy's Excellent Antarctic Adventure!"

Science North is committed to new product development, and Jennifer and her team will be creating a travelling exhibition for 2008 and another for 2009.
