February 2007

Dear Science North Members:

Science North's maintenance shutdown is now over. We're back and better than ever!

A Message from Alan Nursall, Science Director

alan nursall

January and February are hectic times at the science centre and Dynamic Earth. Each year at this time, we are in the final stages of preparation for the very busy spring and summer seasons. Teams of staff from the science, technical, marketing, sales, and finance units are all working together to put the finishing touches on the exhibits and events that will drive an exciting 2007 at Science North.

Each year, we open a major exhibition in the Special Exhibit Hall, just in time for March Break. The installation of Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins exhibit begins during the first week of February and the work will proceed at a ferocious pace to be ready for the March 1st opening.

At the same time, we are preparing to open Dynamic Earth Phase 2 for its new season. Phase 2 includes the opening of the new high-definition, digital, Atlas Copco Theatre, along with new exhibits and a new show in the Inco Chasm. It is definitely a new season at Dynamic Earth, and it all kicks off on March 8th.

And to top it off, during the January shutdown, new activity areas focusing on LEGO and on native Sudburian Meagan McGrath's Everest Expedition were installed. We look forward to seeing you soon as you enjoy all the exciting new science that your science centre and Dynamic Earth have to offer!

A Visit With Ends of the Earth Lead Creator Jennifer Pink
By Lisa Koski, Marketing Specialist Memberships & Programs

With five weeks remaining until the opening of the Science North produced special exhibition, Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins, Jennifer Pink is one busy woman. As Senior Scientist: Projects, Jennifer has a leading role in the creation of major exhibits.

Ends of the Earth has been in development for the past two years, and in production for a year. When asked how the creation of this project differs from Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall, Jennifer replied that, "Ends of the Earth is a much more complex exhibit," She elaborated to say that while Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall was a wonderful project, the content was determined by the life's work of one person. Ends of the Earth contains many more themes including biology, exploration, culture, history, and climate change. In fact, there was so much "great science" available that one of the most challenging aspects of the project was determining what information to include! In the end it all came down to being able to connect the right themes, current science, interactivity, and an overall positive message.

Opening February 5th in the IMAX Theatre:
Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag and Roving Mars

Following the IMAX Festival, Science North is proud to present two new films:  Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag and Roving Mars.

Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag features aerial sequences never before seen on an IMAX® Screen.  John Stratton is a young American fighter pilot who flies the F-15 Eagle, arguably the most potent and successful fighter plane ever built. His grandfather was a decorated World War II flying ace, and he intended to follow in his footsteps. At Red Flag, the international training exercise for air forces of allied countries, many of the world’s best pilots meet for the most challenging flying of their careers. The film was directed by Stephen Low (Volcanoes of the Deep Sea and Super Speedway).

Roving Mars is an exciting adventure that follows the journey of NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers through the eyes of scientists and engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Steve Squyres – the lead science investigator from Cornell University. Their collective dream of Mars exploration came true when two rovers landed on Mars and began their scientific quest to understand whether Mars ever could have been a habitat for life. Roving Mars runs until February 28th only.

Meagan McGrath's Everest Adventure Fascinates Crowd

meagan presentation

Meagan McGrath chats with audience members following her
presentation at Science North on January 24th.

It seems that Mount Everest's siren song can be heard from Sudbury as Meagan McGrath's recent presentation at Science North was made to a packed house.  The 29-year-old Sudbury native will be making an attempt on Mount Everest in May.  The crowd was treated to the Adventurer's anecdotes and photos from her climbs of six of the Seven Summits (the tallest peak on each of the seven continents). Meagan's enthusiasm for mountaineering was contagious and the audience had lots of questions for Meagan afterwards. Strap on your crampons because Meagan will be taking us all up Everest with her via regular reports from Everest to her "base camp" on the 4th floor of Science North. Meagan officially opened her Everest Adventure exhibit on January 25th.
