A Message from Alan Nursall, Science Director

alan nursallI’ve just returned from the Association of Science-Technology Centres annual conference, hosted by the Louisville Science Center in Louisville, Kentucky. This event is a great opportunity to renew friendships with colleagues from around the world, but even more importantly, it is Science North’s biggest annual opportunity to keep the rest of the science centre world apprised of our new exhibitions and shows.

Our next big special exhibition, Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins is receiving a lot of attention.  It will open at Science North in March, 2007, and in the fall it will start a five-year tour of North America.  Best of all, the exhibition that started it all – Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall – is back in the exhibit hall right now, and running throughout the Christmas season.  It first opened to great reviews in 2002 and was honoured a year later with an award from the Canadian Association of Science Centres.  We are very proud of the work we did on this exhibition and its success has encouraged us to create more travelling exhibitions for our visitors here in Sudbury and for major museums across North America.  And we’re even more pleased that we have the opportunity to bring it back to Science North for another four-month showing.  I hope you can take the time over the remainder of 2006 to visit Discovering Chimpanzees and enjoy the wonderful lessons we can all learn from Dr. Jane Goodall.

I'd like to personally thank you for being a Science North Member. The support of our Members allows staff scientists to continually develop new programs, exhibits, and films.  In turn, this improves your experience when visiting our attractions.  Biologists would refer to this as a symbiotic relationship.

Science Term of the Month:
Symbiosis - The close association of two or more dissimilar organisms where both receive an advantage from the association.
