December 2006

Dear Science North Members:

Here in Sudbury lately there's been a whole lotta' shakin' goin' on, and the same is true of Science North.  The snow is here, and Science North is on track for the holidays!

Please click on the links below for more information.

A Message from Alan Nursall, Science Director

alan nursallIt sure wasn't difficult to decide what to write about this time!  Science North received a flood of inquiries about the earthquake on November 29th.  As Science North is, naturally, a resource of information for the community when seismic events like this happen, I'm happy to be able to share more details for the curious…

For real-time earthquake info on the Web, including the Sudbury earthquake, visit: http://seismescanada.rncan.gc.ca/

The initial seismic event was about 5 km NW of Lively.
Magnitude 4.1.
Time of occurrence:  2:22:55 am local time (07:22:55 UTC)

CVRD Inco has confirmed that the event was NOT a rockburst associated with their Creighton Mine operation or any other mines in the area.

There were two aftershocks:
1.  02:36:17 am local time, magnitude 2.0
2.  02:38:17 am local time, magnitude 3.1

The aftershocks were very light and there are no reports yet of the aftershocks being felt by anyone.

Science Term of the Month: Seismic
Seismic: Subject to or caused by an earthquake or earth vibration.
