A Message from Alan Nursall, Science Director
It sure wasn't difficult to decide what to write about this time! Science North received a flood of inquiries about the earthquake on November 29th. As Science North is, naturally, a resource of information for the community when seismic events like this happen, I'm happy to be able to share more details for the curious…
For real-time earthquake info on the Web, including the Sudbury earthquake, visit: http://seismescanada.rncan.gc.ca/
The initial seismic event was about 5 km NW of Lively.
Magnitude 4.1.
Time of occurrence: 2:22:55 am local time (07:22:55 UTC)
CVRD Inco has confirmed that the event was NOT a rockburst associated with their Creighton Mine operation or any other mines in the area.
There were two aftershocks:
1. 02:36:17 am local time, magnitude 2.0
2. 02:38:17 am local time, magnitude 3.1
The aftershocks were very light and there are no reports yet of the aftershocks being felt by anyone.
Science Term of the Month: Seismic

A Science North giant-screen IMAX® film
Closes January 7th, 2007
Become immersed in the forest environment of Gombe National Park in Tanzania as you accompany world-renowned wildlife biologist Jane Goodall on her treks to observe chimpanzees in the wild. Meet Goodall’s now-famous chimpanzee subjects and get an up-close look at them as they fight, hunt, play, and communicate with one another. See archival footage of Dr. Goodall in her early years at Gombe, and watch as Goodall’s relationship evolves from one of strictly scientific interest to one of devotion and a firm commitment to chimpanzee survival. Meet the next generation of researchers at Gombe, whose mission it is to carry on Dr. Goodall’s legendary work. A Science North production, directed by David Lickley. View Trailer.
