Science North staff members were pleased to welcome their prickly friend Quillan to the third floor in 2002, after the death of longtime porcupine resident Ralf on August 6, 2001. Quillan, an orphaned porcupine, acts as an 'ambassador' for his species, correcting any myths, misconceptions and prejudices our visitors may have.

Beaver

Drifter joined Science North in 2004. An adult male beaver, Drifter was born and raised in the wild in Nova Scotia. Drifter’s tail is much shorter than that of a typical adult beaver. He lost half of it to frostbite while in Nova Scotia. He has learned to swim and dive well, even with a shorter tail. Come and see him the next time you visit!

Eastern Screech Owls
|
Included in Science North’s science centre admission.
Science North has adopted two Eastern Screech Owls (Otus asio). The birds were confiscated by Ministry of Natural Resources officials because they were being illegally kept as pets. Due to their injuries, and the length of time already spent in captivity, these Eastern Screech Owls cannot be released into the wild. Science North will share their story and their fascinating biology to increase public knowledge and foster positive attitudes about birds of prey and their conservation.

Science North’s SO2 Lab exhibit includes several interactive components that will provide real-time data and information relating to the local air quality of Greater Sudbury. Visitors will learn how to measure sulphur dioxide (SO2) in our air and monitor emissions. The exhibit will also help people understand why weather and air currents can affect SO2 concentrations at ground-level.
There are currently seventeen sulphur dioxide monitoring stations situated across the Greater Sudbury area. Science North is home to one of these stations, which are responsible for monitoring the concentration of ground-level sulfur dioxide in the air. The monitoring station at Science North is the only one that is accessible to the public.
Science North’s SO2 Lab is sponsored by Vale Inco, Xstrata Nickel and Bestech Engineering.
