Science North - Body Worlds RX

BODY WORLDS Rx
School Experience

Take an adventure through the human body in this trailblazing exhibition. Students will explore the amazing biology and physiology of human health and the dramatic effects of disease.

BODY WORLDS RX features Plastination, a complex technique that removes the fluids from the body and replaces them with plastics that harden. Real human bodies show details of today’s common diseases and the inner workings of our anatomy. Students will find out what our organs, muscles, nervous system and skeletal structures are really made of!

This special exhibit runs from
March 2, 2019 – June 28, 2019

The Cardiovascular System
Grade 7 to 10

This program will allow students to examine preserved lungs and hearts to better understand their anatomy and physiology and the role they play in the cardiovascular system. Students will learn how the form of each organ is related to its function. In addition, they will use a pulse oximeter to test their own heart rates at different levels of activity and learn how to use a simple measure called the heart recovery rate to determine the health of their heart.

The Nervous System
Grade 7 to 10

Students will learn about the brain by examining a preserved one to better understand the functions of the different regions of this organ. Students will also experiment on their own bodies to explore the various facets of the nervous system by performing a sensitivity test, measuring their reaction time and examining their reflexes. Students will also watch how equipment used in neuroscience labs demonstrate how signals (i.e. action potentials) from the brain are relayed to voluntary muscles.
