DESCEND TO THE DEEPEST PARTS OF THE OCEAN WITH A NEW SCIENCE NORTH SPECIAL EXHIBITION CREATURES OF THE ABYSS OPENS TO THE PUBLIC SATURDAY, MAY 23RD

SUDBURY, ON -- The ocean contains more than 99% of the living space on the planet, yet only 3% of it has been explored. Almost every time scientists visit the deep ocean they discover new species.  Catch the spirit of exploration by visiting the new Science North special exhibition Creatures of the Abyss, which opens to the public on Saturday, May 23, 2009!

Creatures of the Abyss is an exhibition that will take you on a journey to the most inaccessible ecosystem on Earth – the deep ocean.  Descend to the deepest parts of the ocean and discover the extraordinary, mysterious, and downright strange creatures of the deep.  Entangle yourself in the tentacles of a life-sized model of a colossal squid -- the largest known species of squid!  Step inside the Bioluminescence Theatre and find out how the creatures of the abyss produce fantastic colored light shows to see and communicate in complete darkness!  Hitch a virtual ride with Alvin, the world's first deep-ocean submersible vehicle.

Creatures of the Abyss is divided by themes that will take you into the deep, and introduce the creatures that inhabit these unique and fascinating landscapes.  It is an immersive and awe-inspiring glimpse into another world.

“The average depth of the world’s ocean is about 4,000 meters (13,000 ft).  In the deep sea, no sunlight penetrates from above.  It is pitch black, under immense pressure from the weight of all of the water above, and persistently cold,” said Brenda Koziol, Science North Senior Scientist for Special Projects.  “Creatures of the Abyss offers visitors the opportunity to experience the environments, discover the amazing creatures in this largely unknown world, and meet the scientists who explore the deep sea”

The new Creatures of the Abyss special exhibition is funded in part by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. For more information about Science North’s special exhibition Creatures of the Abyss visit sciencenorth.ca.
