Themed Event

Introduce the concept of virtual water (the amount of water that is required to produce the food we eat). Demonstrate the relationship between food production and virtual water by adding the estimated litres/gallons of water required to produce items on your menu (See sample menu below). Be sure to add a range of items including a few vegetarian entrees to demonstrate the difference. In general, the greater the protein content of foods, the more water is used in their production. For example, the production of 1 kg (2 lb.) of meat requires roughly ten-times as much water as the production of 1 kg of bread, rice or vegetables. It is estimated that a vegetarian diet can save households up to 35% of their total water usage.

Add water-themed entertainment, water magic demonstrations, music with lyrics that feature “water” such as:

  • “The Water Music”, a collection of orchestral movements composed by George Frideric Handel. It premiered in the summer of 1717 when King George I requested a concert on the River Thames.
  • Cole Porter’s Anything Goes
  • Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific
  • Beatles’ Yellow Submarine.
