Primary - Presenting the Lessons - For the Teacher

The Helping our Great Lakes Neighbourhood lesson plans have been divided into four categories: Great Friend, Great Water, Great History and Great Ecosystem. Each lesson contains background information and an activity, and is supported by a PowerPoint presentation and web-based games. In addition, there is a culminating activity that draws on all the previous material and allows students to employ their new knowledge. Below you will find a suggested format for presenting this material.

  1. Review the For Teacher information. Read the An Old Friend story or present the Primary Old Friend PowerPoint presentation.
  2. View the Great Friend PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Review the Lake Sturgeon Factsheet
  4. Students complete the How Big is Sally Sturgeon? Activity
  5. Students can take the online quiz, Sturgeon and You

  1. Review the For Teacher information sheet: Freshwater Neighbourhoods.
  2. Review the Primary Great Waters PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Perform the Great Water Demonstration
  4. Students complete the Sally’s Freshwater Neighbourhood Activity and the Freshwater Neighbourhoods Activity.
  5. Students can complete the online game, Great Lakes Puzzle.

  1. Review the For Teacher information sheet: Timeline of Sally's Life in the Great Lakes.
  2. View the Primary Great History PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Review the Timeline of Sally’s Life in the Great Lakes materials and explain what a timeline is.
  4. Print the Great Lakes Timeline
  5. Students complete the My Timeline of Sally’s Life in the Great Lakes Activity.
  6. Students can play the online game, Great Lakes Timeline.

  3. Students can play the game with each other. Then they can teach children from another class or family about the Great Lakes by sharing the game.
