Science North Productions | Films in Production | Films in Development

Welcome
In 1994, Science North opened its IMAX® theatre in Sudbury, Ontario and immediately began development of our own giant screen films. Since then, we have released four IMAX films, one giant screen 4D production and we are in development on several other projects, making us one of the leading producers of educational giant screen films in the world. We are the only science centre with an in-house giant screen production unit and we have built a reputation as a specialist in environmental and natural history themed movies.

Our first nature film Bears, was the most successful natural history IMAX film of 2001 and has been booked in nearly 80 theaters to date and counting. We followed that up with the release of Jane Goodall’s Wild Chimpanzees, which won the award for “Best Film for Lifelong Learning” at the Giant Screen Theater conference in 2003. Most recently, Science North Large Format Films launched Mysteries of the Great Lakes on May 3, 2008. Among other awards, the film was honoured with the Grand Remi for “Best in Show” at the Annual Houston International Film Festival - 2009. Mysteries of the Great Lakes is also the first giant screen film to be distributed through Science North’s newly created Distribution Unit.

Since its conception, Science North Large Format Films has shot over 100 hours of footage in some of the most difficult locations in the world. We have partnered with other science centres such as the Ontario Science Centre, and the Science Museum of Minnesota, and have collaborated with world-renowned scientists like Dr. Jane Goodall, and with conservation organizations like the National Wildlife Federation. We have had our films funded by corporations like Fednav, Unilever, Ontario Power Generation, Barrick Gold, and the Bank of America, and by government organizations such as Heritage Canada and the US National Science Foundation. To date, our films have been booked in well over a hundred and fifty venues and this number continues to grow. Above all, we have kept our commitment to produce films that fulfill our mission to create inspiring and educational giant screen films.
